Lasagna With Secret Sauce

Hi friends!

I thought I would share my go-to recipe for lasagna. Lasagna is one of those staple meals that make for a delicious dinner. It’s easy enough to put together and there are (usually) heaps of leftovers for the next day. If you couldn’t tell, we LOVE leftovers here in the Cullum household!

This recipe makes one lasagna. If you have a larger family, feel free to double it! As a family of six, that’s what we do and it typically lasts us two nights.

Ingredients

  • 1KG Beef Mince

  • 1 Jar (700ML) Cesare’s Sauce Original or Meatball Flavoured

  • 1 Box Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles, uncooked (I sub for gluten free)

  • 1 Container (500g) Ricotta Cheese

  • 2.5 Cups Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

  • 1/4 Cup Hot Water

Topping

  • Shredded Mozzarella cheese

  • Breadcrumbs (I sub for gluten free)

  • Italian Herb Seasoning

Method

  • Brown beef mince in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring until no pink remains. Drain excess liquid if necessary. Stir in 500ML pasta sauce, reserving 200ML for the top.

  • Preheat oven to 200°C.

  • Grease a casserole or rectangle baking dish.

  • Spread 1/3rd of the meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish.

  • On top of the meat sauce, layer 3 lasagna noodles, and half each of the ricotta and mozzarella cheeses.

  • Repeat the previous two steps.

  • Spread the remaining 1/3rd meat sauce on top.

  • Add 200ML pasta sauce on top of the meat sauce to ensure all lasagna noodles are adequately covered (this avoids a crunchy top).

  • Top with mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, and Italian herb seasoning

  • Slowly pour 1/4 cup of hot water in one corner of the dish (choose the corner with the most room).

  • Tightly cover baking dish with heavy duty aluminium foil.

  • Bake at 200°C for 45 minutes.

  • Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes (or until the top is a golden-brown).

  • Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • This is a base recipe. It’s delicious as-is, but you can add whatever you prefer to it. For example, you could add pepperoni if you’re a meat lover, or vegetables such as courgette, mushroom, etc.

  • Lasagna goes great with a side salad. I recommend caprese salad (I’ll have to do another post with my favourite recipe!)

  • You can season the beef mince with your favourite seasonings while you’re browning it. It’ll enhance the flavour of the lasagna.

If you give this recipe a go, I’d love to see photos of your finished creation! It's always exciting to check out the various tweaks you come up with. You might just inspire me to give them a try myself!

Until Next Time,

Jackie
