Organisation Highlight: Legacy
Hi Friends!
If you’ve been on our website before, you may have come across our mission statement. If not - go check it out on our Our Story page and come back to this post. Our mission statement includes partnering with Legacy to feed people in our community who are living without. I thought now would be a good time to tell you more about Legacy and highlight their work in the local community.
Legacy was founded by John & Kiri Faiz in 2014 in Palmerston North. It has grown exponentially since and now has locations in Levin, Whanganui, and Savusavu, Fiji. When I moved here to New Zealand, I felt a calling to Legacy. Within a year of living here, they hired me on as their Office Manager. I worked in the admin office for over three years and experienced so much during my time there. I made lifelong friends while there and discovered such a beautiful community of people who have become like family to me.
I felt called to start Secret Sauce Co NZ to help enable Legacy to reach the local community. I’m sure as the business grows, it will be able to help countless other charitable organisations as well. Having worked in the office, I got to see firsthand how hard it is for charitable organisations to secure funding. In fact, with each passing year funding criteria get stricter, competition for the funds gets steeper, and the awards keep decreasing. My goal as an entrepreneur is to alleviate this pressure by providing a stream of income to enable Legacy to serve the community effectively, without having to spend loads of valuable time securing funding.
Legacy is a vital part of the local communities it serves. Palmerston North is Legacy’s central hub that supports all of its locations. Legacy has many functions: it is a church, a Community Centre, and a Housing provider. At the time of writing this, Legacy’s Housing programme has 13 houses and housed over 400 people last year. Two of their houses are focused on youth, and Legacy has allocated a full-time Support Worker to both youth houses.
Legacy has three Community Centres that run many free programmes for the local community. The Centre has weekly community meals happening in Palmerston North, Levin, and Whanganui. These meals feed between 250-400 people every week. The Centre also hosts a kids’ meal weekly after school. Legacy runs Restore, which is a programme that helps people overcome addiction. Legacy also offers Boxfit to help people get fit and healthy, men’s and women’s support groups, and large community events, such as their annual Light Party on 31st October.
You can check out Legacy’s website HERE for more detailed information. Legacy is always looking for volunteers, so if you’re looking to be involved in something that positively impacts the community, feel free to reach out to them! If you’re short on time but have money to give, consider donating to them. They’re a very worthwhile cause and every penny goes right back to serving the community.
I saw so many lives transformed during my time at Legacy. They are making such a positive impact on the local community and people are cutting ties with gang affiliations, breaking addiction cycles, and turning their lives around as a result. What they are doing in the local community cannot be understated and it is my hope that by highlighting them, they gain more exposure, recognition, and support for what they’re doing.
